My Journey to Japan

feature photo

In 2003 while working for IBM as a support engineer I was sent to to Tokyo, Japan to assist our IBM Japan colleagues. The Japanese team was having difficulty with one of their customers who had a 2 terabyte cluster server/storage system that was misbehaving. I don’t recall the customer’s name but I do remember that this customer account was responsible for creating many of the digital animation clips for the movie Final Fantasy and at the time this type of animation was very cool and considered cutting edge technology.

Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within (Special Edition)

Hironobu Sakaguchi (Cinematographer). Sony Pictures 2001, DVD, $2.94

The plan was for me to be in Japan for 1 week but due to limited customer access (delays) I ended up staying for 2.5 weeks. Fortunately I was visiting during the peak of the cherry blossom season, an amazingly gorgeous time of year in Tokyo. Despite the long work hours I was able to take personal time off during the weekends to venture out to local towns and monuments by train and subway. Both the architecture and landscape of the area is breathtaking.

If you ever have the opportunity to visit Japan I certainly encourage you to take that opportunity. It is a very interesting, lively and beautiful place to see with a rich culture to experience as well. I have posted some of the images I captured while in Japan so please enjoy!
